Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid seaweed pigment that occurs in most brown or olive-green seaweeds as well as in other algae. Studies carried out at the Hokkaido University in Japan indicate that when taken on a daily basis Fucoxanthin is stored within fat cells and, over time, induces fat loss. The extract is stored in the cells and increases thermogenin (UCP1), a protein which generates heat through thermogenesis. Thermogenin has an uncoupling function in white adipose tissue fat cells, increases the metabolic rate and thus causes weight loss. Furthermore, it has been shown that the extract can also correct abnormalities in glucose metabolism in muscle tissue, making it an appropriate supplement for diabetics.
