Summer time often means more trips to the beach or lake and increased time outdoors. What Makes a Good Self Tanning Lotion?
Let me break it down for you… When I look for a self tanner lotion, I always start with the ingredients (I look for active and antioxidant ingredients wherever possible). I also look for one that won’t leave streaky lines or orange marks; this is generally found in the type of coloring used in the product.
How Should You Apply a Self Tanning Lotion?
#1 – Exfoliate — Before applying your self tanning lotion, use a mild exfoliant to make sure you’re removing as much of your dead skin cells as possible. Now, don’t be too rough and scrub too hard, rather apply medium pressure and scrub with a loofa sponge (for example) in a circular motion. #2 – Take Your Time — Don’t rush into applying a self tanning lotion. I advise to stand in front of a mirror, so you can see exactly what you’re doing.
#3 – Apply Modestly — More isn’t always better. When applying it to your skin, be mindful of your knees, hands, elbows, feet, ankles and face. These areas have a tendency to reveal the most mistakes. Use a minimal amount of tanning lotion in these areas, and consider wearing latex gloves or a tanning mitt to apply it. I often mix some of the self tanner with regular lotion in these areas to avoid those brown marks that are hard to hide once they arrive.
#4 – Wash Hands and Let the Lotion Dry — After you’ve applied the lotion, wash hands with soap and water. For best results, let lotion dry before putting on clothing.
#5 Hydrate — Last but not least, once you’ve applied the self tanning lotion, keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized is the key to make the color last longer.
